about
During the Highland Clearances, over 400,000 people from the Highlands and Islands of Scotland were forcefully evicted from their homes, with no choice but to emigrate. Living in unimaginable conditions during their passage to their new countries, it is estimated that up to 30% of those that left died en route.
In 2015, the world focused on the plight of Syrian refugees, fleeing from their war-torn country, when in the space of a week, over 900 immigrants drowned while making the crossing to Europe in search of safe homes for their families. Images in the media were heartbreaking, and provided the inspiration for this song.
lyrics
A mhuir, a mhuir, thar chuan thar chuan
Uisge dubh domhainn eadar mise s mo luaidh
A mhuir a mhuir, thar chan that chuan
Gu socair do ghlaodh rium gach oidhch' na mo shuain
Breakers roll in as I long for the sound
Of the wind gently singing your name on the sand
But the white crested wave tops say nothing at all
And cold the bitter rain falls
If the arms of the ocean could carry my love
Oh I’d sing it for you
And if the breath of the north wind could carry enough
Oh I’d sing it to you
Breakers roll in as I search for a sign
Of your face in the memories of terrified eyes
But the white crested wave tops say nothing at all
And cold the bitter rain falls
Lay me down gently and let me fall deep
Oh and sound will I sleep
Lay down my head on the silver sea bed
Oh and long will I sleep
Breakers roll in as I long for the sound
Of the wind gently singing your name on the sand
But the white crested wave tops say nothing at all
And cold the bitter rain falls
Translation of Gaelic section
The ocean, across the sea, cold black water between my love and I
The ocean, across the sea, gently calling to me each night as I sleep

A Happy Place is a beautiful and hope-invoking EP. Gentle voices and acoustics combine with piano and guitar to create a harmony that is pleasing and peaceful. I absolutely love it and couldn’t recommend it enough! Hunterian
